A Peter White Christmas with Euge Groove, Vincent Ingala and Lindsey Webster
at the Lyric Theatre. Show times at 6PM - 8PM, and 8:30PM - 10:30PM. $45. "Every year, Stuart has a White Christmas, or at least A Peter White Christmas as the guitarist, singer and songwriter comes to town with several of his closest friends. This year, Peter White will bring along Euge Groove, Vincent Ingala and Lindsey Webster to put their own special take on the music of the season. It's a rockin' good time and the very best way to get the holiday season underway. For White, who has been coming to The Lyric for years, the Christmas show is personal. "When I was a kid, Christmas was a big part of my life," he said, "My father taught me the recorder and we played Christmas music he arranged going door-to-door."

White did his first Christmas tour in 1995 and it was so popular that it became an annual event with White and his friends.

The musician who would become synonymous with jazz and Christmas grew, up in Luton, north of London. As a child, he played several musical instruments, including the clarinet, trombone, violin and piano. With the Beatles and Rolling Stones dominating the music world, he turned to the guitar. He started on the acoustic and then bought his first electric guitar as a teen and studied Hendrix, Clapton and Jimmy Page. His electric career came to a sudden end when his brother, Danny, accidentally started a fire that destroyed the guitar. White returned to the acoustic guitar and never looked back. He loved early Fleetwood Mac and was introduced to jazz by a friend. His ability to play multiple styles caught singer/songwriter Al Stewart's attention, first as a pianist and then as a guitarist. White played on Stewart's Top 10 album, The Year of the Cat, in 1976 and co-wrote "Time Passages," the hit title track on the next album. He spent 20 years as a sideman for Stewart and others, but in 1990, he set off on his own. His 1996 Caravan of Dreams sold more than 300,000 copies and he learned that jazz aficionados appreciated his musicianship. "I never thought I'd be in a position of having a career playing my instrumental music," he noted. "When I started out, that road wasn't opened to me. Then it worked."

Lyric favorite Euge Groove returns with his magic saxophone artistry. Groove, whose real name is Steve Grove, began playing the piano in the second grade. He turned to the sax when he was a pre-teen and he received a classical education in the instrument. At the University of Miami, he discovered jazz. After graduation, he played with Tower of Power, and as a session or back-up musician for Joe Cocker, Huey Lewis & the News, Elton John, Bonnie Raitt and Aaron Neville. At the end of the 1990s, he developed the persona of Euge Grove and recorded a demo. A recoding contract with Warner Brothers followed and he has continued recording with other labels.

Twenty-something and with matinee idol good looks, Vincent Ingala has already been at the top of the Billboard Contemporary Jazz charts, garnering him four Billboard #1s and nine top 10 hits. He is a wizard instrumentally, playing everything from tenor sax to piano, drums, guitar, bass and lead vocals. He was handpicked to open for Dave Koz when he was 16 and has collaborated with or opened for Chris Botti, Jonathan Butler and Kim Waters. He is known for his consummate musicianship, fun-loving stage presence and energized and inspired performances.

Lindsey Webster, a sultry and soulful young singer and composer, has already scored two Billboard #1s on the Contemporary Jazz Chart, making her the first vocalist to garner that position since Sade. Webster holds her own in a largely male-dominated genre made up of artists often twice her age, and she has quickly become a favorite on the charts and international touring circuit." www.lyrictheatre.com. 772-286-7827. DECEMBER 27, 2019

My Mother's Italian, My Father's Jewish and I'm Home for the Holidays at the Lyric Theatre
7PM - 9PM. $50. "Steve Solomon spent a good chunk of his professional life as a physics teacher and high school administrator in Brooklyn. He took a chance and left the stability of a steady paycheck to follow his heart into comedy. The newly-minted comic found he was competing against comedians 25 years younger, and while he could hold his own, he couldn't make a living. Comic Pat Cooper heard his repertoire of some hundred voices, dialects and sound effects and told him to take his act to Florida.

It was a good move. Solomon came up with the name for a show, My Mother's Italian, My Father's Jewish, and I'm in Therapy, and then built an act around the title while perfecting it on a cruise ship. The show went on to an award-winning stint on Broadway. Now Solomon has trained several people to do the show and it is performed around the world. He followed that show with My Mother's Italian, My Father's Jewish and I'm Home for the Holidays, which takes family togetherness to a new level when everyone gets together for the holidays.

Solomon said that the play is successful around the world because families are the same around the world and that family is the best source for material. "You don't have to be Jewish or Italian," he said. "You just have to be able to leave a family dinner with heartburn and a headache. There are 32 people at the dinner and one bathroom and one plunger. When you grow up in a big family, as I did, you grow and change. You tolerate things as a kid because you didn't know any better. When you come back, one uncle has dementia and the other has terminal gas."

Lest you think Solomon's family members might take offence at his good-natured barbs, he said that they are among his biggest fans. "They love knowing they're in it and they love coming to see it," he said. "My Stupid Cousin Kenny comes, but he gets annoyed. Of course, he thinks that Hamburger Helper comes with somebody to help. I impersonate my Sister the Smoker so well that my family thinks it's her."

Also at the party are Uncle Willie, Stuttering Cousin Bob, Steve's new therapist, Cousin Sal and his parole officer and a variety of characters every one of us knows from our own families.

While the show is scripted, there is room for improvisation. "On any given night, there will be 10-20 percent off-script," he said. "If I get a good laugh, the stage manager writes it into the script. You can't ignore a cell phone. I ask for the phone and say, 'It's my mother.' If someone is late, I stop and say, 'Sit down, can I get you a watch?' I lean over and tell him, 'Here's what you missed.'" Solomon said that he can only see two or three rows off stage and it's the "grumpies" who are always looking at him. "In South Florida, you get a lot of grumpy old people," he said.

You've been given fair warning. If you're late, have a ringing cell phone, or are grumpy, you may well become part of the show. It won't bother Steve Solomon at all." www.lyrictheatre.com. 772-286-7827. Browse SupportStLucieCounty.com for more events! 59 SW Flagler Avenue, Stuart

JANUARY 4, 2020

Presented by Friends of Savannas Preserve State Park. "Visitors will experience living history as they explore how people in Florida lived circa mid-19th century. The Pioneer Day Festival showcases many time-period exhibits and demonstrations, including cooking over hot coals, flywheel engine demonstrations, quilters, basketry and more! Demonstrators will show participants crafty ways to use corn husks and other natural resources. Guided hikes and kayak tours will be offered throughout the event. Weather permitting, Savannas Preserve State Park staff will perform a prescribed fire demonstration. Heirloom Entrees will be on-site selling food throughout the event.

The history of the Treasure Coast largely revolves around the Pineapple Farming Industry. By 1895, the Jensen Beach area was known as “The Pineapple Capital of the World”. Captain Thomas E. Richards was credited with planting some of the first pineapple plantations in the area. Soon after establishing the plantation and his home on a high bank located along the west Indian River Shore, Captain Richards’ family, including his daughter Lucie, joined him here. Lucie began writing a series of letters to her old friend in New Jersey that detailed her daily life as a Florida Pioneer. The letters have since been compiled into a volume called “The Memories of Eden”. Miss Lucie’s letters provide us with invaluable insight into what the life of a Pioneer entailed. Join us on Pioneer Day as we explore the life of Miss Lucie.

Admission to the event is $3/person; cash only. For more information about Pioneer Day, please call the Education Center at 772-398-2779 or go online to www.FriendsofSavannas.org . JANUARY 8, 2020

Married to Broadway at the Lyric Theatre, 7PM - 9PM
$53. "They say that workplace romances are not a good idea, but don't tell that to Ron Sharpe and Barbra Russell. They first met when they played the romantic leads of Marius and Cosette in Les Miserables. The story they like to tell is that they were married so often on stage that they decided to get married in real life. Their love affair with each other and with Broadway has never altered and they have asked some of their talented friends to join them in a special show, Married to Broadway, which features the best of The Great White Way from the past to the present. There will be songs from Phantom of the Opera, Carousel, Guys & Dolls, and West Side Story, as well as surprises for the audience.

Ron Sharpe was the first actor to have played both male leads, Marius and Jean Valjean, in Les Miserables on Broadway. Other Broadway credits include original productions of The Scarlet Pimpernel, The Civil War, and in Disney's King David. He reprised his role of Jean Val jean for the 25th anniversary production of Les Mis when it returned to Broadway in 2014 and he was featured in the production of Sweeney Todd at Live at Lincoln Center with Emma Thompson.

Barbra Russell performed as Cosette on the national tour of Les Miserables. She has performed as Luisa in The Fantasticks and Laurie in Oklahoma and has appeared in The Little Shop of Horrors, Side by Side by Sondheim and The Mystery of Edwin Drood. She has performed in concert around the world and conceived, produced and performed on the CD Sweethearts, the music of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy. Both have performed at the White House for Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

The Sharpes are producers and directors and a recent high point was co-directing a production of Les Mis by the New Jersey Repertory Company. The romance and music continue." www.lyrictheatre.com. 772-286-7827. Browse SupportStLucieCounty.com for more events! 59 SW Flagler Avenue, Stuart

$50. "Take the seductiveness of the Argentinian tango and French burlesque. Add the oohs and aahs of European circus techniques. The result, Cirquesco, an unforgettable evening that explores the art of choreography while testing the limits of the human body. From beginning to end, Cirquesco is a breathtaking production featuring state-of-the-art lighting, costuming and choreography.

Cirquesco was developed by Kevin Black, a former dancer, who decided that being on the stage was not fulfilling enough for him. He enjoyed choreography, costume design and set design, as well. He worked for several years at Norwegian Cruise Lines, developing and producing shows for onboard entertainment. In 1992, he settled in Florida and began Kevin Black Productions to provide entertainment for everything from cruise lines to resorts and theaters. He has presented Dance D'Amour and Dance Your Pants Off to sell-out crowds at The Lyric. Recently, he has directed Spamalot, Tommy and The Rocky Horror Show at The Crest Theatre in Delray Beach. He has designed several Cirque-style shows, spurred in part by the success of Cirque du Soleil.

"Before Cirque du Soleil, the circus theme was thought to appeal only to younger audiences," he said. "It was all about fun and clowns and silliness in three rings. Cirque du Soleil made circus a form of art that would appeal to the intellectual side and brought it into the adult world."

For Cirquesco, Black has brought professionally-trained dancers and acrobats and added state-of-the-art lighting and costuming and an electrifying soundtrack for a titillating and jaw-dropping exploration of the human body in action. Steve Trash Loves Garbage at the Lyric Theatre, 7PM - 9PM
$15. "The self-proclaimed garbologist and green magician does magic tricks using everyday things people have thrown away. His goal is to entertain with magic tricks and illusions while telling the story of how nature works and how we need to preserve and conserve it. This is an interactive one-hour show that is perfect for the whole family!

Trash grew up in Alabama and has a degree in theater from the University of North Alabama. He moved to New York and studied at the Stella Adler School of Acting. In a 2010 interview with Gazette.net, he explained how he fell into garbage. "I wanted to make a living in entertainment," he said. "I was an actor, but that didn't really fulfill what I wanted. I wanted to reach people with fun, comedic entertainment. I stumbled onto doing tricks with trash and it just grew into this big thing, being able to share ecological principles through really high-quality magic tricks and stage illusions."

Audience members may watch Trash saw Mother Nature in half, but not to worry. She will be put together by "reusing, reducing and recycling." "I'm always looking for a way to make the magic play into a story I tell about how Mother Nature works and how we can conserve resources. I always want to do very high-quality magic. Magic should never suffer from trying to tell the eco message."

Trash aims his show at the entire audience, but performing for children is his passion. "Probably the greatest thing on the whole planet is a kid laughing out loud. Because they are very pure about the things they laugh about. You can really get at their hearts in a meaningful way if you can make them laugh."

Trash walks the magic walk. He created the world's first eco-friendly green magic set that can be used by adults and kids. It is made up of renewable bamboo and rubber tree wood. In 2013, he and Kelvin Holly released an album called The Trash Tunes, and he is a creator of The Recycle Cycle, a mobile recycling edu-station, to help kids learn the importance of keeping the earth clean and litter free. He has been given the Environmental Educator of the Year award, and his Green Magic Set won an American Specialty Retailers Association Award in 2009. He was a featured guest on LeVar Burton's Reading Rainbow Magic Week and has appeared on CBS, ESPN and CNBC. He has appeared in theater, fairs and festivals around the world, spreading his message of going green and being kind.

"Be good. Be amazing. Don't be mean." Those are his watchwords. Come and watch and join the fun." www.lyrictheatre.com. 772-286-7827. Browse SupportStLucieCounty.com for more events! 59 SW Flagler Avenue, Stuart

Mutts Gone Nuts at The Lyric Theatre, 2PM - 4PM and 5PM - 7PM
$38. "If you go onstage with kids or animals, you may well find yourself overlooked. If the animals are the cutest rescue dogs on the planet, it's a given, but that doesn't bother Scott and Jane Houghton of Mutts Gone Nuts. They are happy to share the stage with their adorable friends for a high-energy, high-wire show that is perfect for the entire family. Kids, parents and grandparents will love the pooches and the adults they let share the stage. The show is billed a "Canine Cabaret" and that should tell you that you're going to get a little of everything. The Houghtons, who are known as the "disorderly duo," have been performing together as a comedy team since 1984 and are known for blending physical comedy and circus artistry. They traveled the world and spent several years at Lee Greenwood's theater in Tennessee and as the featured act for Greenwood in Las Vegas and Tennessee. The duo also spent seven years with Dolly Parton's production, Dixie Stampede. In 1996, they adopted their first rescue pooch and began fostering dogs in the off-season for a local rescue group. They brought Chico into their act in 2005 and by 2007, they'd reinvented themselves as Mutts Gone Nuts.

The Houghtons are very serious about keeping their shows funny, and they're also serious about the welfare of the dogs in their care. Their rescue dogs are trained using positive, reward-based methods like toys and praise. They look for what each dog likes to do and cultivates that talent. The dogs live indoors, have two acres of fenced area to run when they are at home and travel in large, padded, climate controlled kennels for safety when on tour. Chico, who is (probably) a Chihuahua and Pomeranian mix, is only 15 lbs., but he's the top dog. Feather, the group's first Greyhound, is a rescue dog who was saved after she couldn't run fast enough. She may not be a racer, but she has jaw-dropping jumping skills and has the unofficial world record for the highest jump by a dog. Pixel, also known as Wheels, is a Border collie mix. She can run and out-maneuver much bigger dogs and is Chico's understudy.

Charlie is a Jack Russell terrier who was rescued on his last day, He's agile and loves to climb, which makes him the perfect high-wire walking dog. Chuck Taylor is a Frisbee-playing border collie who was given up because he preferred to herd sticks instead of cows. Geronimo is a cattle dog mix who is the only dog in the world to jump into two spinning ropes at the same time. Rox Steady is a Heinz mix who looks just like Geronimo. Her specialties are agility and tricks. Paco, who was picked up as a stray in Wyoming, does everything from high jump to barrel. McNerdy's favorite toy is the Frisbee and he could play all day, dazzling the crowd with his athletic ability.

To even up the sides, the Houghtons have brought some two-legged creatures on board. Samantha Valle is one of the world's top trainers and a spokesperson for animal rescue. She and Geronimo hold the Guinness World's Record for a dog jumping rope Double Dutch. They have appeared with David Letterman and Steve Harvey. Jonathan Burns is a contortionist who became fascinated with magic as a child and learned that he could make a living contorting his body. He has appeared at colleges and festivals around the world. If you are lucky enough to have a kid in your life, you don't want to miss this show. If you don't have a kid, you might want to rent one. They'll have an awful lot of fun, and you'll laugh yourself silly, even at Scott's corny jokes. Try your doggone best to see this show. You'll be glad you did." 772-286-7827, www.lyrictheatre.com . Terry Virts at The Lyric Theatre, 7PM - 9PM
"He made an appearance on the last Star Trek Enterprise episode in 2005, which is fitting, as the original series is what sent him soaring into space. NASA astronaut Terry Virts has served as a pilot of the space shuttle Endeavour, a crew member on the Russian Soyuz spacecraft and most recently as commander of the International Space Station during 200 consecutive days in space, one of the longest continuous space missions of any NASA astronaut. He helped install the outpost's 360 degree observation module and made good use of it, taking hours of video and hundreds of thousands of still images, including some featured in the National Geographic book, View from Above. He's a star of the breathtaking IMAX film, A Beautiful Planet, featuring his footage from space.

Now you have the opportunity to step back, some 220 miles from earth, and experience our planet from a new perspective. With Terry Virts as your guide, you will gain a deeper understanding of our planet's beauty, climate and place in the universe. You have the opportunity to hear Terry Virts talk about his time in space and the new perspectives he gained about our world and then have the opportunity to ask questions about everything you've always wanted to know about space travel.

Terry Virts always wanted to be an astronaut, but it turns out that his favorite planet is Earth. It wasn't until he was farthest from home that he came to really appreciate the beauty of our world, and he shares that perspective through his stunning photos and videos.

National Geographic has been making explorers of all of us for more than a century through groundbreaking storytelling from the world's best and brightest scientists, explorers, photographers and filmmakers. National Geographic Live! brings their stories to the stage and enables audiences to interact with the men and women who have gone where few have gone before.

Fasten your seat belts. It's going to be a thrilling ride." Tickets are $55, purchase at lyrictheatre.com. Browse SupportStLucieCounty.com for more events! 59 SW Flagler Avenue, Stuart

Drop by Drop: Watering the seeds of change in South Sudan at The Lyric Theatre, 7PM - 9PM
"Salva Dut tells his story of fleeing the civil war in Sudan and explains how that experience led to his current mission — bringing clean drinking water to his home country. Salva was born in a rural village in southwestern Sudan to the Dinka Tribe. At 11 years old, the Sudanese civil war reached his village and separated Salva from his family. He joined thousands of boys, famously known as the "Lost Boys" on their journey by foot to seek safety in a refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya. After living in refugee camps for 10 years, Salva was given the opportunity to move to the United States, where he would be embraced by a family in Rochester, NY. A few years later Salva learned that his father was still alive in Southern Sudan but was suffering from a water-borne parasites and disease. This inspired Salva to help his father and his country by bringing clean water to those in need. This was the beginning of Water for South Sudan.

Salva's story is told in the New York Times bestseller A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park. About Water for South Sudan: Water for South Sudan delivers direct, transformative and sustainable quality-of-life service to the people of South Sudan by efficiently providing access to clean, safe water and improving hygiene and sanitation practices in areas of great need. The StepCrew at The Lyric Theatre, 4PM - 6PM and 7PM - 9PM
"StepCrew and its cast of 11 combine three styles of percussive dance, featuring the world's top talents in Irish, Tap and Ottawa Valley Stepdancing. It is a pure celebration of dance, showcasing each traditional form while creating what Jean Butler of Riverdance called "a unique and seamless blend of all three." The company takes the audience on a journey from a house party in the back kitchen of an old Irish cottage to a lamp-lit street in New York City to a French Canadian lumber camp in Quebec, using nothing more than their talented feet.

Nathan and Jon Pilatzke, brothers, spent their summers like a lot of young Canadian children, traveling around the province competing in fiddle and stepdance festivals. They grew up to be among Canada's leading Ottawa Valley Stepdancers and along the way, they met Cara Butler, a multiple Irish Stepdancing champion and principal Irish dancer for the famed Chieftains for two decades. The three went on to create a new dance production company, StepCrew.

They have a not-so-secret weapon in the musical ensemble that performs with them and has everything from Canadian champion fiddle players to some of the most sought-after musicians in the Celtic, folk and rock genres. They have performers from the likes of the Chieftains, Cherish the Ladies, Loreena McKennit, Carlos Nunez and Bowfire. Among them is Alyth McCormack, a native of Scotland, whose vocals contrast the vigor of the dance but act as a soundtrack inspiring it.

The show itself takes the audience on another journey, through a varying array of textures from high-energy dance to haunting vocals, groovy music, complex choreography and comical props. The StepCrew was designed to highlight staging and musicality and the pure talents of solo performers with nothing more than their feet, instruments and voices to reach their audience. They offer everything from the bluesy origins of tap to traditional Irish and Scottish music and modern day Celtic fusion.

Six-time Grammy winner Paddy Moloney of The Chieftains said it this way: "The StepCrew does not simply draw their audience in, they take them by the hand and remind us what dance is meant to be about - fun!"" 7PM - 9PM. "Prepare to be amazed by Treasure Coast student performers in the fourth annual Youth Arts Celebration presented by The Lyric League! Young entertainers, grades 12 and under, will take to The Lyric stage in this dynamic talent showcase to represent their passions and dedication through various forms of performing arts.

The Youth Arts Celebration is not a contest, but rather an opportunity to recognize these students for their commitment to their craft, the courage to express themselves and their love of the arts. The emerging artists are diverse in their talents and backgrounds, but all are united by their love of performing. While not all of the participants have aspirations of performing professionally, they are clearly benefiting from their arts education demonstrating positive, respectful, focused behavior and support for one another. Beyond the appeal of the bright lights and thunderous applause, these talented performers also benefit from the sharing and exchanging of ideas, exposure to different styles of artistic expression and a sense of camaraderie. Reinforcing how arts education instills discipline and values so vital to becoming a quality human being. The parents and educators deserve equal credit, as there is no denying the level of commitment these families have made to their children.

The Youth Arts Celebration is presented by The Lyric League, comprised of Niki Norton, Chair, Paula Blake, Janice Binger, Scott Eves, JoAnne Harris, Sharon Holt, Sheila Kurtz, Pat Pendergast and Linda Weiksnar. The League's focus is to raise funds to expand The Lyric's Arts & Education Programs affording Treasure Coast youth even more educational opportunities for cultural enrichment. The Lyric's Arts & Education Programs provide master class and residency opportunities for students in area schools; The Discovery Series for Young Audiences, a series of school-time shows exposing students to live theatre and correlating theatrical content to standards-based curriculum; Family Fun Series provides the magic of live entertainment, reinforcing the fundamental values of time spent as a family; and building character on and off the stage at The Lyric's AWESOME!
